Introduction
The Great 4-Bubble Field swirled and vibrated. All was going normally. It was at that exact instant that in one of the bubbles, a civilization made their final masterpiece.
This masterpiece was a gigantic clockwork structure. This civilization's clockwork was highly efficent- better than the best computers we will have in thousands of years. It used kinetic energy to- but I am being lost in the details. This structure was the size of several galaxies, and learned and adapted. Its goal was to adapt and spread. The civilization intended this, not their descendants, to be their legacy. Many died as the machine spreaded, sprawled across its gears and turned over the months into metal and gears. Others intentionally did not reproduce. But with time, it overtook what made it.
It covered its bubble in several million years- only a few instants in the Great 4-Bubble Field. The structure learned how to expand further. With time, it used its own motion to move its own bubble to other bubbles, coming into contact and spreading to them as well. Over the billions of years, it became a many-bubble spanning organism, eating universes quickly- we would say slowly, but thousands of years is a snap in the Great 4-Bubble Field.

Part 1
I was called to investigate some odd structures that were appearing in several people's homes. They were made of metal, like what you would find in some sort of mechanical device, but seemingly expanded like gas. They could "eat" matter. The few that appeared were quickly stopped by pouring water over them and rusting them. But what could be their cause?
