Up until a few years ago, the Qyaon system was a bustling spaceport for the many Qyen colonies and their Angalesh allies. During this golden age, the Angalesh were introduced to the larger galaxy and instantly lifted from a mostly planet-bound culture to one that could travel the stars. An alliance between the races was formed, and both prospered. Also during this time, the First Contact Law was established. It basically states that in the event of the discovery of an alien race, one should determine it's technological level. If they have reached
a) Interstellar space, hold nothing back. Trade and negotiations encouraged.
b) Interplanetary space, preform an alignment check before initiating relations.
c) Global or near-global civilization, only specialized personnel are allowed to contact this race. Contact the nearest allied colony and report the system's location.
d) None of the above, avoid at all costs. Contact nearest allied colony so they can mark the system off-limits.
e) Special case: If the race has already had contact with another race that did not originate form race #1's planet, perform an alignment check only for the trade of advanced technology.
There is a very complex system for preforming alignment checks, and the more information, the better. A score of over 33 points in either direction on the scale identifies the race as either "pure" or "corrupted". A score in between signals a "neutral" race. The system is designed to have enough leeway for cultural quirks, but still be strict enough to recognize potential threats or allies.
Qyen:
Pronounced like "Keen", the Qyen are a semi-aquatic race. They have ten limbs, typical for advanced animals on Qymas. The first set, normally used to guide food into the mouth, have atrophied greatly and are now only used in communication. The second set forms a pair of membranous fins, a secondary means of respiration. The last three sets are used for swimming, with the first two also used for manipulation, and the last able to fold up into a foot for terrestrial locomotion. Their tail is still used for swimming.
They have two sets of nostrils, one behind the eyes that leads directly to the lungs, and another, smaller set at the end of their trunk-like snout. This second set still goes to the lungs, but first the air passes through the snout, which is lined with smell-receptors. They also have two pairs of eyes, one for looking forward, the other for looking downward. They have green-blue skin, which is covered in thousands of tiny scales. The scales are hydrodynamicaly designed, allowing the Qyen to slip through the water with minimal friction. This is good, because the Qyen are avid carnivores, and seafood has been the staple of their diet for their entire civilization.

From the Journal of Iniros Olus:
While once a proud and noble civilization, the Qyen have been reduced to scavengers. Their cities, their spaceports, all have returned to the sea from which they came. Most of their citizens have either died from starvation or exposure. Those that have survived now hide in the shadows of their once great world, waiting for some unsuspecting being to walk past. They prey on their weak, compete over meager resources, hoard their small treasures from another life. It's a sorry sight down there...
Why this has happened, I'm still unsure. It most likely had to do with their cutting all ties to us, though which is the cause and which is the effect we may never know... I am in fact dictating this in the Kali Archives. We're attempting to restore power now, to see if they recorded anything that might give us a clue. To be frank, it looks like they set off the largest atomic explosion I've ever seen...
