Despite being fed, the young Koans had a habit of repeatedly slamming themselves into the force field in the attempt to devour their siblings, knowing there must be others to eat. They often tested it, trying to spike-kill it with their tentacles. This most often occured if Wanderer or Nal came by, causing the Koans to lunge at them, and hit the forcefield. They were obviously quite fearless, and if given the chance, would likely gang up on attempt to eat Nal and Wanderer.
Raminaa had gone into deep hibernation, apparently to regain energy.

"I don't think giving them psychic powers at this point would be such a good idea..." Wanderer noted after observing the young Koans,
"I agree. Let's wait untill the Masaak-like feeding frenzy stage is over. On top of being safer, it would be easier, as we wouldn't have to strap them down to inject the retrovirus."

Raminaa awoke, and came back into the medical bay. " Oh, Koans never stop being like that. It slows down a bit as they get older, but otherwise, they really need to be trained not to eat everything. It was the only way most of us could make advanced civilization. It'll be a few months before they're ready, and possibly a year for me to train them. Unless you can knock out the feeding frenzy gene somehow. "

"Sounds reasonable... might as well get it out now before we have to deal with the next generation."
Nal returned shortly with a syringe-like device to draw off some of a young Koan's blood. One was selected, and two well armored Angalesh were brought in to help restrain it as Nal drew a sample. The Koan was then sedated to allow the three to get out of the enclosure without having to fight it off.
Once this was done, Nal and Wanderer left to analize the DNA and design yet another retrovirus.

Raminaa laughed slightly, " You'll probably need to build factories if you want to manufacture so many retroviruses. "

Nal laughed lightly at the joke, for it was true, and set to work.
...
The next day, the anit-feeding-frenzy retrovirus was produced, and they repeated the process of restraining, injecting, and sedating the Koans one by one. They had to switch out restraining Angalesh every 200 or so, but all in all, the operation was a sucess.

The Koans slowly exhibited slightly less hostile behavior, but would still be a handful. By now, they were registering massive waves of radio waves, communicating with each other with a simple language. Most likely plotting to escape and eat Nal.

"Do you think we should start the process of naming them..."
"No. Not now. Later, but not now."
"Or begin training them to be on our side?"
"I think we should start that as early as possible... Besides, isn't naming them Raminaa's job?"
"I don't know. I'm not familiar with Koan social mechanics."

Raminaa looked at them, " Koans don't have time to name each one in such large numbers, we name ourselves. This mostly also keeps us from accidently naming half of them one name, and the other half the other name because we can't think of original names. It's usually this point that they start making consistent weird radio waves, and using those as signals for themselves. "
He went over to the different areas, looking at them, listening in to their communication. " I can train them, probably a day since they're genetically modified each. But that still comes out to nearly three years... maybe if I make each one train another one, it'll go faster, but I can't guarantee it being done in under a month. " He began communicating with one, teaching it things at the speed of light through the use of their communicative radio waves.

"I'm sure there's a few Angalesh that would be able to help... though you'd have to train them to train the Koans..."

" Koans teach as fast as we can think. That's one of the beauties of radio wave communication, we can send images that our brains automatically put together, among other things. " Raminaa continued teaching the various Koans.

"Then I suppose it is up to you. Getting someone else into the job might slow things down more than they speed it up. Fortunately, once the next generation comes, we'll have far more teachers... though we'll have far more students as well... Speaking of which, Nal is ready to add in psionics when you are."

" They're teaching each other now, should be done relatively quickly. Seems the killing the feeding frenzy gene actually made them more communicative, atleast that's one thing. Pump in the psionics if you want, but you might want to beef up the forcefields, unless of course they won't know how to use their powers... "

"Again, we realy don't know if there will be genetic memories or instincts, but it's a risk we'll have to take to get the project going."
Over the next several hours, the trained Koans were injected with the psionic genes. They would most likely take hold over the next week.

Raminaa continued observing the now trained Koans, listening into their communication. " They seem to be questioning why they keep getting injected with various things. Not very appreciative of being experimented upon. I haven't told them that they'll likely have psionic powers soon... So they're mostly still in the dark. "
