"Thirty minutes to portal completion. Do not be alarmed if you hear a sound like the screeching of a thousand worlds, that is an unfortunate side effect of universal wall breakage. Do not allow dogs to eat the portal remote. Do not use the portal remote as a flotation device. Do not choke on the portal remote. Do not break the portal remote. Do not let the portal remote get wet. Do not spit on the portal remote. Please return the portal remote to the portal remote tray when you are done using it. This has been a public service announcement. Thank you." Dethy Hogronet complained that LAH was talking to fast as she stumbled into the Portal Room.

"Screeching of a thousand worlds? Either I've gotten used to it, or you guys are doing it the hard way..."
"And what would be the easy way, Wanderer?" Calvin asked.
"Sorry, that's a trade secret." A big grin flashed across his face.

(Sorry for lateness. A "friend" came over and wasted loads of time.) "Fifteen minutes to portal completion. Please disregard any unpleasant sensory feelings you may have, not limited to the experience of being lynched by sharks, the experience of being at a wedding between two devils, and the experience of simultaneously feeling like you are too cold, too hot, imploding, and exploding."

"You guys are doing it the hard way. All in favor for use of sensory dampeners?"
One or two members of the team raised their hands.

A loud voice from somewhere shouted, "Sensory dampeners do not work that way!" "Portal completed. Please do not smoke while entering the portal. Thank you."
Everyone huddled around. The landscape was long and purple. It appeared to go on forever. They sent a rat out and viewed its movements via a camera. The monitor showed the rat's movement through the world. Hopefully it would survive. Then they could go through.

"These portals are two way, right?" Dr. South asked.
"Why?" asked Calvin.
"What if something finds it and comes trough?"
There were a few moments of uneasy silence.

It was a valid concern. Some of the rich, purple dirt had already poured through. They would feed it into a machine for tests. A fat, flying penguinesque thing flew in. Several more came out, and they swarmed. They apparently weren't carnivorous, as they did not attack. They did take some food rations. They through them across the ground to break them, and then ate their contents. "We're lucky those things weren't dangerous.", James Q. Columbus said. "Maroontee, would you please go in there?" John Maroontee looked fearfully at the portal before finally becoming the first man to step into another universe.

"Next time we open a portal, have some turrets or something around to repel unwanted travelers." said Dr. South, who was busy taking a look at the penguin-thing.
The rest looked to John to see if it was safe to go though.

John seemed fine. He would have to remember not to listen to anonymous governmental agents in the future. "Hey, everyone, look at this!" An enormous cadaver was lied out on the ground, next to a hole. It was an enormous mandibled worm. It looked like it could pack quite a punch, were it alive. It was good for all of them that this was dead.

"We're going to need guns..." muttered Martin as he stepped through and saw the dead worm. The rest followed behind him.
"What do you think killed it?" asked Calvin.
"Let's have a look." said Dr. Onis
Both Dr. South and Dr. Onis bent down to examine the corpse, looking for signs of wounds or poisoning.

John Maroontee pointed at what appeared to be the head segment. "Ummm.... guys?" The head was missing. ----- Bovit yelled a loud cry of victory. He had done it! He had killed it! It wasn't edible, but he had killed it nonetheless. That girl... it was attacking it... if he hadn't gone out there, seh would have been dead. He proudly hung up the head on his bed.

"Blood loss from a removed head segment... right."
The pair were slightly embarrased for overlooking it.
"Looks like it was chopped off..." said Dr. Onis.
"By what?" asked Calvin.
"Something we should be on the look out for, obviously."

John looked at its underbelly. "Am I the only real doctor here? Maybe I'm not just a disposable person at all." Dethy commented "I think you are disp-" The captain silenced her. "Anyway, what I've found is, there is what appears to be a spear sticking out of it, made out of a black material."

Dr. South took great offence to the comment, but decided to leave the argument for when they were safely back on the ship.
Wanderer's curiosity was piqued by the spear, particularly the material.
"Is is Obsidian? Jet? Onyx? Some other black stone?"
Why he would be so interested in the nature of the material was unknown.

"I would think it would raise the question of if there was intelligent life here.", said Man Deth. "Who else would make such a spear?" "If there's intelligent life here, you may just get to do your job already," said George.
