Sketch of an Avashevir, as seen in a vision of a local shaman
Plain 0: Beneath the physical realm that mortals call home lies an endless expanse of darkness, known as Plain 0. It is composed of nothing but darkness, save for the beings that inhabit it. These creatures are made of only thought, and mind takes the place of flesh in these parts. While most of these beings are rather benign and keep to themselves, a few races have found ways to interfere with the physical realm. Quite possibly the most dangerous of these are the Avashevir.
Avashevir: Like all the creatures that inhabit Plain 0, Avashevir have no physical form. This doesn't stop them from messing with the physical realm, however. Avashevir have the unique ability to posess and feed off of a mortal's mind.
It all starts off as a little voice in the afflicted mortal's head, like the one that tells you when you're doing something wrong. However, this voice convinces that it is ment to be there and is a natural part of their mind, and not that of an Avashevir. The mortal is usually convinced, and the Avashevir has unlocked the door to it's mind. Over time, the voice grows louder, then becomes a distinct personality. Eventually, the mortal's personality is supressed and finally destroyed under that of the Avashevir, who now has complete control. Rarely, the mortal will survive the process intact, and will remain concious, but unable to do anything under the Avashevir's control.
Posessed mortals will allmost allways exhibit advanced mental skills, including varrious forms of telepathy and telekenisis.

Over the last day or so, I've come up with a handy analogy for Avashevir control as it applies to removal of said mind-vampire. At the start, it's like a single thin, rubbery telephone line. Not a whole lot of information goes either way, and it's easy to snap the line if you realize what's going on. However, if you don't, more and more of these thin lines are attached to you, letting more information through. After it passes the "second personality" stage, these lines are now more like bungie cables, and the Avashevir can just say "screw the talking" and simply yank on them to get what they want, along with taking information in. Under complete possesion, the Avashevir has you rigged up like a puppet.
Metaphoricly speaking anyway...
When the person dies or walks into an anti-Avashevir field, these lines, or cables either loose their attachment point (after which they are just reeled in), or they are forcibly yanked out, respectively. Using this metaphor, if you were to attach rubber bands to a wall and pulled, they would just snap. However, if you tried this with bungie cords... you'd probably end up taking a chunk of the wall with you.
Now, in a coma, the person isn't exactly dead, but their mind isn't very lively either. This would mean (using the metaphor again) that most, but not all of the Avashevir's cables would come loose. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on which side of Plain ) you're on, the connection works both ways. The Avashevir is tied to the body untill the comatose person either dies or is killed by a fellow Avashevir host.
Exact population numbers for Avashevir have never been taken, though the numbers given are in the range of up to several thousand to as few as fifty. They don't tend to gather together and are mostly solitary, though they sometimes gather around particularly weak-willed populaces. Under normal circumstances, a human population can expect one takeover per 5,000 people over a course of a decade. Numbers will vary depending on the relative willstrength of the population, with stronger willed races having fewer takeovers, and weaker ones more.
As far as we can tell, they do not mate in any way. Avashevir have never made references to being "born", nor do they worry about death of anything except a trophy host. It is assumed that they are unbelivably long lived or immortal.
